Pick the right people...having to work with egotists or goof-offs means you get nothing done. However, the right people just make it better.

Remember Achum's Razor. What ever can go wrong, will. And it does. Repeatedly.

You seem a bit confused there, Wolfie...
Achum's Razor states that
"The simplest solution is probably the correct one."
Murphy's Law states that
"Anything that can go wrong will."

Something for the weekend:
Your film is a composition on every level, so compose it.

Not sure who it was that first came up with this (maybe Syd Field?) but it's good.
Be prepared to kill your darlings.
Every scene should serve the purpose of moving the film, as a whole, forward.
No matter how cool a scene is or how much you love it - if it does not help move the action forward it should be removed.

When shooting a documentary, A.H.F.F. (Always Have File Footage) I once put my class thru 30 minutes of images from corbis.

if there's dialgoue in the movie, make sure to get good sound. I once filmed an interview with a crappy old clip-on mic, and the strong wind that was blowing at the time made anything the dude said totally inaudible.
